Reasons for drinking water

WHY drink enough water?

To maintain the balance of body fluids

Our bodies contain around 60% of water, needed for ~
digestion; absorption; circulation; creation of saliva; transportation of nutrients; maintaining body temperature.

AIM

  •   2 litres of water, daily
  •   Vegetables which are high in water
  •   Avoid alcohol as it dehydrates

Better kidney function

Good News!
As mentioned in the other post, forget trendy expensive “detoxing” treatments because the kidneys do a fantastic job in cleansing and removing toxins…as long as you continue to keep the kidneys hydrated with enough water.  Blood urea nitrogen,  the watersoluble waste that is transported out with the urine, flows freely with enough water.  Too little water and the body can produce kidney stones…ouch!  painful!

Better bowel function

Adequate hydration prevents constipation.

Beautiful skin

When badly dehydrated, skin looks more dry and wrinkled.  For optimum skincare, drink enough water and use an SPF moisturizer for the skin to hold in moisture, and protect from the damaging effects of the sun.

Water energizes muscles

Muscle cells can suffer from lack of water, which can result in poor muscle performance or muscle fatigue.  Water replaces fluids which are lost via sweating during exercise.  Keep a bottle of water handy for sipping while working out.

Water and weight loss

Drinking plenty of water gives a “filled up” feeling, helping a dieter in cutting calories.  Food containing high water content requires more chewing, and chewing in itself can aid in losing weight!  (Negative calories, about 11 calories an hour for chewing gum).

Chewing and weight loss

Chew until the food becomes a liquid in your mouth ~

as the saliva in the mouth contains digesting enzymes, lingual lipase (for digesting fat), and salivary amylase (for digesting starch or carbs), the initial digestion begins in the mouth!  Hence before the food has even reached the stomach to be digested there, it already has begun breaking down in the mouth.

1.  You end up eating less.  It takes the brain 20 minutes to get the signal from the digestive system that you are full.  So chewing s~l~o~w~l~y makes good sense.

2.  In researching for this article, I found that according to one internet source, adequate slow chewing can also alleviate allergies.  This is because the more you chew, the more surface area of food is being digested by the enzymes, resulting in less food having to be digested by the stomach enzymes.  The longer the food is literally decomposing(!) in the stomach, the higher the allergy risk.

You can add to the list of reasons for drinking plenty of water: Fat loss is only possible when the body is well hydrated – anyone on a diet will not enjoy maximal results if enough water isn’t consumed.

Water is need for EVERY metabolic process, including burning fat, so the #1 requisite for any successful diet is WATER!
