Making Soft Toys

30 Dec

Because of living with chronic pain and unable to do much physically, and needing to keep sane(!) I started stitching.

My embroided design of Ladybird Mum and Child, inspired by a 1920's style metal ladybird - - - 2009

I started with fat quarters printed with all kinds of designs and made cushions.  I even made a special cushion, a kind of scrapbooking technique of applique and x stitch; a gift for my cousin.

Scrapbooking kind of cushion for my cousin.

I X stitched (cross stitched) a lot, something I used to do in my mid 20’s (I am a late starter to stitching, never had the confidence until that point!) and started creating my own designs.

One of my X stitch designs, stitched up: Baby Tortoise. (You can find the free pattern on my blog).

I also made / make bags

A knitting bag I made for an online friend in a craft swap.

My Hermann tortoise, Daisy Elizabeth inspired me into making many soft toy tortys!

But I didn’t just create tortoises, I made a dog (Chester the Jack Russell is behind that one I think), dolls, assorted sea creatures, zombie and bunnies.

A few of my Soft Toy creations are for sale at The Little Log Cabin, here – – – and soon here.

For those of you interested in having a go yourself at soft toy and doll making I searched the net and came across this free fun tutorial by Octavia.

Mincemeat & Marzipan Bake

23 Dec

I made this a couple of days ago, modifying a recipe to suit my own requirements.

Jar of Mincemeat (it’s really worth paying a bit extra for a luxury one!)
Runny Honey
Marizpan (to roll out for cutting out pieces) 150 g / 5 oz
Butter 150g / 5oz
Self Raising Flour 300 g / 10 oz
Golden Sugar 75 g / 3 oz
Cold Water 2 – 3 tbsp
Milk 2 tbsp

Square Baking Tin
Cookie Cutters
Rolling Pin

Preheat the oven Gas 4 / 180 C / Fan 160 C.
Make breadcrumbs with rubbing the butter and flour until they resemble “breadcrumbs”.
Add and mix the sugar, water and milk to form dough.
On a floured surface roll out the dough to fit a 12 inch square baking tin. Don’t forget to grease the tin with butter first! (I lined my tin with foil which I greased).
Spread the mincemeat over the dough, and then drizzle runny honey over that.
Again on a floured surface to prevent sticking, roll out the marzipan and cut out what shapes you desire: I had fun choosing Scotty dogs, angels and holly leaves. Decorate the mincemeat with the marzipan shapes and bake for about 35 minutes, until the marzipan is golden. When cooled, cut into slices and serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

Happy Christmas!

18 Dec

Maybe not Chester Pup’s First Christmas (that was last year) but this is her first experience of snow.  She was fascinated, charging about the garden, sniffing it…trying to work out what is this?

Sugar, the Forever Mexican, was having none of it…resolutely, sensibly staying indoors.  Curled up on cushions where it is warm.

Me?  I felt like I was 6 years old again.  Amazing that most of the UK is covered in the white stuff.  It’s been many years since I’ve seen this much snow in Norfolk.  Shame it’s melting.
